PADAG & The Macknificent Freedom Fest Presents…

Healing Racial Trauma with Dr. Joy DeGruy: A Juneteenth Commemoration

Join us on Sunday, June 19th @ 12:30pm as the People of Afrikan Descent Advisory Group at the Center for Nonviolence, in collaboration with the Macknificent Freedom Fest, hosts a FREE half day virtual conference on healing racial trauma, featuring acclaimed author, researcher, and educator, Dr. Joy DeGruy!

Dr. DeGruy is an award-winning, nationally and internationally known expert in the field of trauma and healing. She coined the term PTSS (post-traumatic slave syndrome) to identify the behaviors people of Afrikan descent have adapted to survive racial trauma, and she is praised for her engaging, in-depth workshops, presentations, and lectures.

The facilitated process that Dr. DeGruy offers is culturally affirming, trauma-informed, research-based, and rooted in best practices for working with people of Afrikan descent. Participants attending this conference will come away with a better understanding of:

  • The roots of racial trauma and PTSS

  • How internalized oppression manifests in Black people’s interpersonal and professional relationships and environments

  • How racial trauma causes harm to self and others

  • Strategies for recognizing and dismantling beliefs rooted in white supremacy and internalized oppression

  • Healing from racial trauma and moving toward collective uplift

Registration runs Monday, May 23rd through Saturday, June 18th. The first 25 participants to register will receive a FREE copy of Dr. DeGruy’s book Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Enduring Legacy of Injury & Healing along with the companion workbook!

This event is made possible through the generous support of the Barnes & Thornburg Racial & Social Justice Foundation and the People of Afrikan Descent Advisory Group at the Center for Nonviolence, whose mission is to educate, empower, awaken, and advance the quality of life for Black people and Black communities in Fort Wayne and across the state.
